Snow-Bound Silence
percussion ensemble (up to 14 players) Duration: 5' Grade 3 Katherine Bergman Music © 2024 Snow-Bound Silence takes inspiration from the unique quieting effect of a fresh snowfall. Imagine stepping outside and into a snowstorm: snowflakes gently sparkling to the ground, a gray sky blending with an untouched white blanket of snow, and a stark quiet hush in the air. Believe it or not, there is science behind the silence you experience after snowfall.
The snow's fluffy structure of ice crystals provides open spaces within the crystals that absorb sound waves, creating a serene quiet, as if the chaos of the entire world stops around you. It takes as little as one inch of snow to hear a difference, and just two inches of accumulation can absorb up to 60% of sound. "Snow-Bound Silence" uses many metallic sounds of the percussion ensemble to emulate a calm, sparkling, and awe-struck environment.
