Suburban Wild
clarinet, violin, cello, piano, fixed media Duration: 8' Katherine Bergman Music © 2023 Suburban Wild was written to recognize the importance and urgency of returning nature to our own backyards. When we think of nature, we imagine something far away, out in the wilderness, many miles from civilization. But this compartmentalization of nature into small subsets of land is unsustainable, as many critical species are unable to thrive without vast areas of habitat, much larger than a single state or national park. Luckily, research shows that converting even small areas (such as backyards or city parks) from lawn or non-native plants to native plant species leads to a drastic and immediate increase in wildlife, quickly attracting essential birds and insects. When enough small spaces are converted, it creates pathways for wildlife to connect and travel between the "far off" nature we have compartmentalized and through the "homegrown national park" in our urban and suburban areas. Suburban Wild depicts an urban landscape being revitalized through responsible land stewardship, enabling nature's resiliency to thrive as we learn to coexist.
